I worked in critique sessions with the artist Bruce Dorfman through The Art Students League of New York from July, 2021 through May, 2023. Most recently, my work, “The sky is glorious, burning through with sunlight. There is new green growth for me to seek out as I follow the path forward,” was exhibited at the Phillips Collection Juried Invitational, Inside Outside, Upside Down, show in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and social upheaval.
My latest paintings might be described as “abstract landscapes.” The viewer may see trees, horizons, and sometimes roads, but those shapes derive their meaning from the organization of line, color, and shapes on a two-dimensional picture plane. The instantaneous power of vibrant colors is a key element in building the structure of my work through repetition and movement on the surface of the plane. I am interested in the compositional elements moving over and on the surface of the picture plane and the tensions they create. My explorations are of the infinite variations of color within in a limited vocabulary of shape, and of the emotions that such paintings of trees can elicit from the viewer.
I studied, taught, and practiced art as a student at New York City’s High School of Music and Art and as an art major at City College in New York; a high school art teacher; and a brochure and exhibition designer at the US Weather Department in Washington DC.
While living in Rio de Janerio for three years I took classes at the Museu de Arte Moderna; and also at Glen Echo. I have a master’s degree in Social Work and have worked as a psychotherapist with young children, using art extensively in their treatment. Throughout my professional career, I have continued to pursue my own art studies and paintings, which have been exhibited in venues throughout the Washington, DC area.
